These are just some of the behaviors associated with high palatable foods. According to studies published by the US National Center for Biotechnology Information, these are very similar mechanisms to the deficits and withdrawals experienced in the body during drug addiction.

Not coincidently, they are similar in mechanism to the illicit drug use deficits in the Fat Kid’s reward functions. What is now becoming currently accepted in the medical community is that another group of neurotransmitters exerts an effort in incentivizing highly palatable foods. Those are known as endogenous opioids, which are synthesized by your own body and sometimes called “happy chemicals.”

As discussed in Handbook of Behavior, Food and Nutrition, researchers blocked dopamine receptors in lab mice, while introducing sweetened liquid. Their theory was that facial expressions like lip licking and tongue protrusion were indicative of “liking” and “wanting.” At the time, it was believed that such behaviors are exclusively mediated by dopamine, but researchers found that the animals engaged in such behaviors although their dopamine receptors were blocked. However, they found that when they also blocked opioid receptors in addition to the already-blocked dopamine receptors, the animals would also lose these types of “liking” facial expressions.
